The Problem with Online Travel Agents
The conflict between hotels and online travel agencies that sell their rooms is in full swing, and it will only get more ferocious.
While there may always be a place for the traditional shop front Travel Agent, where customers can get personalised and hopefully friendly service, there should be no need for online middlemen.
Customers, by using these mega OTAs like Expedia, the Price Line Group and Trip Advisor, are depriving hotels of millions of dollars in revenue. Hotels are forced to pay their ever increasing commissions for the dubious privilege of being listed on these OTAs websites.
Hotels are afraid if they are not listed on these sites they will lose business. In many countries hotels are forced to advertise the same prices as those shown on OTAs
It is time for hotels to stand up and realise that the huge yearly commissions they fork out to these OTAs would be better spent on promoting direct sales.
It is easier than many think.
